John Dean

John Dean is an award-winning journalist of 32 years standing. The freelance agency in which he is a director was established in September 1996. In May 1998 he was named North-East Freelance Journalist of the Year for a portfolio which included environmental and law and order affairs, and again in May 2002. In May 1999 he was named North-East Environmental Reporter of the Year and again in May 2000.

His work includes:

Feature writing on subjects including Information Technology, science, business/e-commerce, industry, education, aviation/travel, recruitment, criminal justice, the arts and the environment. He has done work for publications as diverse as Retail Newsagent, The Sunday Telegraph, Daily Express, Police Review, Farming in the North, The Northern Echo, The Sunday Post, Way2Go, BC, Close Up and Networks.

Promotional copywriting, newsletter writing and editing, public relations, and communicatons management for clients including Science City, At PR, Aegies Associates, Durham Wildlife Trust, Riney Publishing, University of Teesside, the Industry Nature and Conservation Association, Darlington for Culture ( and clients in the educational field. Wrote material for the Science City book Scienta 08 in Newcastle. Also did public relations work for County Durham Development Corporation for several years and has written material for websites, including for the revamped Newcastle Science City website.

Project Management: Runs The Global Short Story Competition for Certys, ran The Short Story Competition, which ran for three years in conjunction with Darlington Arts Centre, The Northern Echo and Orange, and Making A Difference, The Northern Echo’s community environmental project sponsored by One North East.

Education: Works in schools and arts venues as a creative writing/literacy teacher and is a chair of governors at a primary school


John Dean is a crime novelist with ten books to his name, all published by Hale.

Frances Griss

Frances Griss became a journalist in 1987 after graduating in law. She worked on newspapers around the country as a news reporter and feature writer before becoming freelance in 1997.

Frances has a lifelong interest in the environment and is interested in writing about social housing, the law, agriculture, business and family matters. She has edited publications including Durham County Life, for which she was the launch editor, and has worked as a photo journalist.

Public Sector communications support

Frances currently specialises in in-house communications support for public sector organisations and recently carried out PR/media work for the social housing organisation Dale and Valley Homes, including writing and issuing press releases, liaising with staff and tenants and writing, designing and producing printed and web-based promotional materials, including leaflets, newsletters, reports and brochures

Frances has also worked in the press office of Middlesbrough Council, supplying public relations and communications support.

Other clients have included Wear Valley Development Agency, Northumberland Wildlife Trust, EcoSack and Reeth Dales Centre.


Frances’ work includes feature writing on subjects including the environment, science, farming and the countryside. She was one of the co-writers of the Scientia 08 book celebrating Science in Newcastle, produced for Science City.
